SpaceX makes space look (almost) easy

Take a look at this incredible footage of SpaceX’s third attempt to land its Falcon 9 rocket on a remotely-operated barge in the middle of the ocean.

SpaceX is a 13-year old private company founded by Elon Musk (co-founder of Paypal, CEO of Tesla electric cars) which has already won a supply delivery contract to the International Space Station and realised many firsts in the space sector. They’re now trying to make their rockets re-usable after flying to space (rather than let them burn upon re-entry in the atmosphere or have to pick up the boosters from the ocean like we’ve been doing for 60 years), which would dramatically lower the cost of access to space.

To do that their rocket must learn how to make a controlled descent and soft landing on its own, as well as reach a tiny target with accuracy. Not an easy feat when you’re plummeting down towards the ground from space, but SpaceX is almost there.

Space is hard, but SpaceX makes it look easy, and Elon Musk is the Tony Stark of our world.
